So what’s the difference between “factory tint” and “aftermarket tint”? And how can you tell if an existing tinted window is a factory tint or an aftermarket tint?
Factory tint is embedded in the glass before the vehicle is even fully assembled. It’s not a film that can be put on or taken off. It’s part of the very essence of the glass itself.
Factory tint is usually around 70% VLT (visible light transmission) for most newer 2 door and 4 door cars. Pickup trucks and SUVs usually also have about 70% VLT tint on the 2 front door windows, and a darker VLT tint on the rear windows. (About 20%)
Aftermarket tint is a film that can be added to an existing window. This can be done in the car dealership before the vehicle is sold, or in your local tint shop after you’ve already purchased the vehicle. Aftermarket tint typically comes in various levels of VLT, such as 5%, 15%, 20%, 35%, 50%, 70% and more. It can be put on the glass, or taken off the glass. It can be applied over top existing factory tinted glass.
One way to tell if a window has an aftermarket tint, is by rolling it down a few inches and carefully looking at the top edge of the glass. An aftermarket tint film will start about an eighth to sixteenth of an inch below the top edge of the glass, so you will see a small gap between the edge of the glass and the start of the tint film.
